This pen has been made using an Apprentice Roadster style pen kit. The burl wood is Box Elder, which is in the maple family. Care has been taken to apply several layers of color into the wood and then sealed with a super glue (cyanoacrylate) and friction polish finish. This Box Elder burl is native to Wyoming, grew in the Big Horn Mountains and then harvested near Ten Sleep, Wyoming. My pens have a 100% guarantee that covers workmanship and your satisfaction.
American Ash hollow form; 4" tall x 5" wide (X-35). This hollow form was turned when the wood was green causing it to warp and elongate through the pith. The pith has been left in the piece which is highlighted by the dark grain. Leaving the pith in, straight through the middle of the piece, is a technique that is seldom used. The reason is it "usually" results in splits and cracking around the pith. As you can see this hollow form is a success.
In this video Sam compares the 40-40 Grind with a typical bowl gouge grind with swept back wings. He sets up sharpening for the 40-40 grind with the aid of Ron Brown"s set-up block that allows for sharpening using the Wolverine Vari-Grind attachment. Sam shows some nice close-up shots of both tools and ends the video turning on a Box elder bowl using both grinds. Sam turns a walnut bowl and applies texture that imitates "age." He highlights the Merlin 2 angle grinder from King Arthurs' Tools. The surface texture is applied randomly with no recognizable pattern. A fun project for a food safe salad bowl that looks as if it has been around for awhile. Sam shows the step-by-step process for applying a double insert into the top of the lid for a turned box. The box he is working on is made of beautiful Granadillo wood. The first insert is made from Holly. It is the white, contrasting wood which forms a ring on the lid. The second insert, at the very center of the lid, is made of Granadillo.
